Clubhouse
Connecticut
This centerpiece to a historic clubhouse originally designed by Delano & Aldrich had undergone several character-diminishing renovation campaigns, lapsing into an unloved space used only for circulation and large-scale assemblies. The club’s leadership challenged us to create a memorable “living room,” in which to welcome both large groups and small gatherings in elegance and comfort.
We raised the height of the room, revealing daylight through long-obscured clerestory windows. The new coffered ceiling, punctuated with large brass lanterns mounted to decorative grilles, serves a vastly expanded HVAC system. This enlarged volume also enabled the creation of a new interior French window at the mezzanine level. Framed with paneled shutters and hand-carved brackets, many a bridal bouquet will be flung from this festive addition to the room. The floor level features a new latticework wainscot, refreshed furnishings, and exquisite hand-painted wallpaper by Gracie Studios.
